Mario Sanchez Nevado
The award-winning Illustrator and Art Director, Mario Sánchez Nevado, runs the Madrid-based studio Aégis Illustration, creating artwork and designs for bands and publishing houses all over the world.
His distinctive, surreal aesthetic and his caustic approach on storytelling has granted him global recognition. With a solid yet ever-evolving personal style, his striking collection is deeply woven with bold, stinging narratives. His vibrant color palettes are key to the atmospheres and scenery of his signature dream-like environments. Critiques of society’s morals, politics and canons are viscerally felt between the lines of his works. Part magical storyteller, and part sobering messenger of society’s ills, Mario’s work compels a deeper consideration of the world around us.
In his own words, Mario aims to “design great things for people who have a story that needs to be told. This is not a job: It’s a way of life.”

Mario-
I’m TJ, I suffer from bipolar I disorder. The struggle to just try and “be normal” is brutally difficult.
In a desperate struggle to hang on, if even for one more day, I typed bipolar art into a google search. After scrolling through what seemed like an endless array of beautiful pieces without much thought I found your beautifully profound piece with the woman holding her head exploding with fire from the inside.
I didn’t see a title but whether you meant to speak to bipolar disorder or not this piece brought me to tears. A perfect depiction of what life with bipolar looks like through my eyes.
My insides feel like they are exploding (speaking to my manic episodes) yet my brain expresses nothing but pain and disparity (depressive episodes) for the thoughts, actions and humiliation I feel I impose on my loved ones.
I believe the beauty of art is the intimate story every individual can tell through our eyes, our experience, our struggle.
Thank you for giving me and those who share my struggle a voice, an existence, and an outlet as we desperately try to find some type of normal.
My apologies for the lengthy message.
With the highest regards,
TJ

Your letter is vulnerable and that makes it fantastic! The link between vulnerability and weakness sadly seem to be hardwired into our societies DNA. For me, when you chose to share a small piece of yourself with the world, you continued the narrative for the piece of art. My belief, something about you changed connecting with such intensity to the Flame Lady. I think you felt heard, like someone was writing your story, More important, validation that your not alone.
Reading your story had a big impact on me personally. My brother has schizoaffective disorder. Hearing your words about your illness sound very similar to what he has tried to convey to us in the past. Now I had to find this picture of the flame lady. You unknowingly gave me a new perspective about my brother and his struggles. They also sparked curiosity and excitement. What if I showed this picture to him and he felt a connection, or saw some of his story within the paint strokes. What could that possibly do for him?
I guess I just want to thank you for showing your strength by being vulnerable.
