Creating Shadows
In this video/text Photoshop tutorial we’ll take a look at two methods for creating shadows. Both methods are easy to learn and fairly easy to implement. Learn how to fade a shadow as it gets further from the subject, and how to transform a simple drop shadow into a convincing cast shadow.

Catherine, thank you so much for doing this tutorial. It was just what I needed as I knew nothing about creating shadows. The before and after is remarkable. I couldn’t believe the difference.

Fabulous! Glad to hear that it was helpful – it is the little things that can make all the difference in elevating a piece.

Hi Catherine – What was the adjustment you did on the merged fisherman layer before you went to the other fisherman layer you’d prepared earlier? I was practicing the extraction from a white background which worked. I merged the layer so my object was on a transparent layer (worked great using the blend-if) however when going to do a drop shadow I couldn’t isolate the actual object, the drop shadow appeared as the entire box. I was using a flower.
Thanks
Morenike

Thank you for a great tutorial on creating shadows. I had been using drop shadows but for some reason never considered putting the result on a separate layer so it could be futher manipulated.

Thank you so much. This is something that has been a challenge for me…who knew it was so easy?
