Blending in extractions with a gaussian blur:
A quick fix way to blend an extracted layer to the background and make it less ‘stuck on’ looking is to duplicate your extracted layer; on the bottom layer run a Gaussian Blur. You can see the subtle but effective difference this makes in the images below.
Andrei’s power tip:
You can achieve a similar effect by using Layer Styles and using a black Outer Glow on your extraction layer.

Caroline……Do you do any additional blending after adding your extraction(s); like shadowing for example?
Love your tips,

A nice, subtle effect.

Great tip!! I like how if your duplicate layer is a smart object you can readjust the blur to suit.
I have also had pretty good luck with modifying the selection. Under Select>Modify>Feather. Usually I will do a Select>Modify>Contract first. Say about 1 or2 pixels (depending on how messy my extraction is 🙂 )and then Feather about half of whatever I contract. All depends on the resolution of the original.
